Join a team that shows up every day for young people and families. At Beacon House, our work is grounded in relationships, consistency, and a shared commitment to helping youth grow and succeed.
Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week for at least 8 weeks
Overview:
Beacon House DC is seeking dedicated Volunteer Tutors to support students in grades K-8 with homework, general studies or specialized subjects such as literacy and math. Tutors will work one-on-one or in small groups to reinforce classroom learning, build foundational skills, and foster a love for learning.
Responsibilities:
- Provide academic support in general subjects or focus on literacy and/or math
- Engage students in meaningful, skill-building activities
- Adapt teaching strategies to meet students’ learning needs
- Maintain a positive and encouraging learning environment
- Communicate progress and challenges to Beacon House staff
Qualifications:
- Passion for education and youth development
- Experience working with children (preferred but not required)
- Strong skills in literacy and/or math (if tutoring in a specialized subject)
- Reliable, patient, and enthusiastic about helping students succeed
Commitment:
We ask for a minimum commitment of 8 weeks to ensure consistency and impact for our students.

Commitment: Two (30 – 45 min) mentoring sessions per week & one Saturday per month for at least 8 weeks
Overview:
Beacon House DC is looking for Volunteer Mentors to support students in grades 5-12 by providing guidance, encouragement, and positive role modeling. Mentors will work with up to two students, fostering personal growth, leadership skills, and academic motivation through consistent engagement.
Responsibilities:
- Build meaningful relationships with up to two mentees
- Meet twice a week for mentoring sessions (virtual or in-person)
- Participate in at least one Saturday session per month, including field trips
- Provide social, emotional, and academic encouragement
- Serve as a trusted role model and advocate for student success
Qualifications:
- Passion for youth mentorship and development
- Strong communication and listening skills
- Commitment to consistency and reliability
- Ability to create a safe, supportive, and inspiring space for students

About Beacon House
Beacon House is a community-based nonprofit organization located in the Edgewood neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Our mission is to provide children in under-resourced communities with the support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Through our academic enrichment, mentoring, athletic, and youth development programs, we are committed to building brighter futures for the students and families we serve.
Position Overview
This internship is designed for individuals passionate about education equity, youth development, and the inner workings of nonprofit organizations. Interns will gain hands-on experience supporting program development, implementation, and nonprofit operations while making a direct impact on the lives of children and teens in our community.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning, coordination, and implementation of youth programming.
- Support Youth Development Mentors (YDMs) with activity setup, student engagement, and classroom management
- Help collect and organize student attendance and program data for reporting purposes
- Contribute to program planning meetings and support with special projects or events
- Assist with volunteer coordination, family engagement efforts, and community partnerships
- Provide administrative support related to communications, scheduling, and program materials
- Shadow nonprofit leadership meetings to gain exposure to strategy, fundraising, and operations
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed an undergraduate or graduate program (Education, Social Work, Public Policy, Nonprofit Management, or related fields preferred)
- Interest in youth development, education, or community-based work
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Reliable, self-motivated, and willing to take initiative
- Experience working with youth or in a nonprofit setting is a plus, but not required
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and community members
