Athletics & Mentoring

Sports as a Platform for Growth, Belonging, and Leadership

Beacon House Athletics is a core pillar of our youth development model, using sports as a platform for mentorship, academic accountability, and personal growth. Rooted in the Edgewood community and connected across Washington, DC, our athletics programs serve hundreds of young people each year from elementary school through high school.

More than competition, Beacon House Athletics is about consistency, relationships, and opportunity. Coaches, staff, families, and alumni come together to create an environment where young people are challenged, supported, and known on the field, in school, and beyond.

Our Approach

More Than Sports

At Beacon House, athletics are intentionally integrated with mentoring and academic expectations. Participation reinforces discipline, goal-setting, teamwork, and leadership, while supporting positive school engagement and personal responsibility.

Through consistent coaching and long-term relationships, young people build confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging that extends well beyond a single season.

Athletic Programs

Beacon House offers year-round competitive athletic opportunities designed to meet youth at different stages of development. Programs include:

Competitive, mentorship-driven program that builds discipline, teamwork, and leadership while supporting athletes on and off the field.

Football

Skill-focused program that emphasizes youth engagement, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a supportive, competitive environment.

Basketball

Skill-building programs that emphasize fundamentals, confidence, and teamwork while introducing players to the strategy and pace of the game.

Baseball and Softball

A year-round competitive program that develops athleticism, coordination, and leadership while fostering confidence and team pride.

Cheer

Promotes physical fitness, goal-setting, and personal achievement through individual and team-based competition.

Track

Programs emphasize skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership, while creating pathways for older youth to compete at the high school level and beyond.

Athletics are supported by dedicated staff and trained volunteer coaches, many of whom are alumni or long-standing members of the Beacon House community.

Academics and Accountability

Academic engagement is a core expectation of Beacon House Athletics. Coaches and staff work closely with families, schools, and Beacon House Education Labs to reinforce attendance, effort, and progress in school.

Athletics participation complements academic support and mentoring, ensuring young people are supported holistically rather than in silos.

Community, Family, and Alumni Leadership

Beacon House Athletics is deeply rooted in community. Families play an active role through team support and volunteer leadership, while alumni frequently return as coaches, mentors, and role models.

This multigenerational culture of pride, accountability, and service is central to what makes Beacon House Athletics a source of belonging for youth and families.

Safety, Structure, and Care

Beacon House is committed to providing safe, structured athletic experiences. Programs are led by trained staff and volunteer coaches and operate in partnership with schools, leagues, and community organizations. Clear safety protocols, equipment standards, and supervision practices support the physical and emotional well-being of participating youth.

How Youth Participate

Youth connect to Beacon House Athletics through family engagement, school and community referrals, and seasonal registration. Some athletic programs include participation fees related to leagues or competitions. Beacon House works to reduce financial barriers and ensure access whenever possible, so that no young person is excluded due to ability to pay.

Families and partners are encouraged to connect with our team to learn more about upcoming seasons and opportunities.
