Education

The goals of Beacon House's educational programs include to instill an appreciation for how important academic achievement is, help create good study and work habits, help youth improve their school performance and advance from grade to grade, and help youth graduate from high school and move on to a job, and/or further training, including college.

FOCUS on Excellence | College Bound | People-Love-Animals (PAL) | Beacon House Choir

Volunteers for these programs are welcome. Volunteer schedules and opportunities are here.

FOCUS on Excellence

FOCUS on Excellence is Beacon House's cornerstone education program for 1st through 8th graders which began in September 2001. The program offers one-on-one tutoring in a back to basic reading and math program which is helping Beacon House youth reach grade level-mastery in these skills. Yearly assessment test results indicate that each year participants average an increase in reading of 2 grade levels or more, and in math average an increase of 1.2 grade levels or more. Students meet with trained volunteer tutors in weekly, individualized, two - hour sessions throughout the school year.

Teen Tutoring:  We offer a math and reading tutoring program for high school students modeled closely after the FOCUS curriculum.  This program is designed to help our high school students successfully complete high school armed with the academic skills to perform well on college entrance exams, gain admission to college or a professional school, or to enter the workforce in gainful employment.

College Bound

College Bound is a partner program that helps make college a reality for students who would like to attend college, but who need encouragement and direction. Each student is paired with one volunteer adult partner. During the year, students and partners meet weekly to work together on math and language arts. Students also receive help with SAT prep and college applications. Other aspects of the program include college tours, career fairs, and scholarships to qualified applicants.

People-Animals-Love (PAL)

PAL is an after school and summer camp program which provides opportunities to interact and care for resident PAL pets and learn about animals and science in a fun and creative way.

Beacon House Choir

Beacon House children are taught to sing by the Youth Choir Director of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington and have joined with their suburban counterparts from Arlington to give several concerts.
