Education

The goals of Beacon House's educational programs include to instill an appreciation for how important academic achievement is, help create good study and work habits, help youth improve their school performance and advance from grade to grade, and help youth graduate from high school and move on to a job, and/or further training, including college.

FOCUS on Excellence | Ready, Set, Read | After School Study Hall | Reading Falcons | College Bound | People-Love-Animals (PAL)

FOCUS on Excellence

FOCUS on Excellence is Beacon House's cornerstone education program, which began in September 2001. The program offers one-on-one tutoring in a back to basic reading and arithmetic program which is helping Beacon House youth reach grade level-mastery in these skills. Yearly assessment test results indicate that each year participants average an increase in reading of 1.6 to 2.6 grade levels and in math average an increase of 1.4 to 1.6 grade levels in just twenty, 2-hour sessions. It is one of Beacon House's goals to provide every child the opportunity to participate in FOCUS.

Ready, Set, Read

Ready, Set, Read is geared towards youth grades kindergarten through third grade. Participants meet four times per week and work on literacy skills in small groups and via computer utilizing the Earobics Literacy Launch educational program.

After School Study Hall

After School Study Hall provides tutoring and homework assistance to youth each day after school. Assistance is provided via staff as well as a cadre of committed volunteers. Age appropriate curriculum and educational exercises are provided to each participants.

Reading Falcons

Led by dedicated volunteers, youth who participate in Reading Falcons gather once a month to attend field trips to the local library to check out books and read with volunteers.

College Bound

College Bound is a partner program that helps make college a reality for students who would like to attend college, but who need encouragement and direction. Each student is paired with one volunteer adult partner. During the year, students and partners meet weekly to work together on math and language arts. Students also receive help with SAT prep and college applications. Other aspects of the program include college tours, career fairs, and scholarships to qualified applicants.

People-Animals-Love (PAL)

PAL is an after school and summer camp program which provides opportunities to interact and care for resident PAL pets and learn about animals and science in a fun and creative way.
