House's educational
programs include
to instill
an appreciation
for how important
academic achievement
is, help create
good study
and work habits,
help youth
improve their
school performance
and advance
from grade
to grade,
and help youth
graduate from
high school
and move on
to a job,
and/or further
training,
including
college.

FOCUS
on Excellence
FOCUS
on
Excellence
is
Beacon
House's
cornerstone
education
program,
which
began
in
September
2001.
The
program
offers
one-on-one
tutoring
in
a
back
to
basic
reading
and
arithmetic
program
which
is
helping
Beacon
House
youth
reach
grade
level-mastery
in
these
skills.
Yearly
assessment
test
results
indicate
that
each
year
participants
average
an
increase
in
reading
of
1.6
to
2.6
grade
levels
and
in
math
average
an
increase
of
1.4
to
1.6
grade
levels
in
just
twenty,
2-hour
sessions.
It
is
one
of
Beacon
House's
goals
to
provide
every
child
the
opportunity
to
participate
in
FOCUS.
Ready,
Set, Read
Ready,
Set,
Read
is
geared
towards
youth
grades
kindergarten
through
third
grade.
Participants
meet
four
times
per
week
and
work
on
literacy
skills
in
small
groups
and
via
computer
utilizing
the
Earobics
Literacy
Launch
educational
program.
After
School Study
Hall
After
School
Study
Hall
provides
tutoring
and
homework
assistance
to
youth
each
day
after
school.
Assistance
is
provided
via
staff
as
well
as
a
cadre
of
committed
volunteers.
Age
appropriate
curriculum
and
educational
exercises
are
provided
to
each
participants.
Reading
Falcons
Led
by dedicated
volunteers,
youth who
participate
in Reading
Falcons gather
once a month
to attend
field trips
to the local
library to
check out
books and
read with
volunteers.
College
Bound
is
a
partner
program
that
helps
make
college
a
reality
for
students
who
would
like
to
attend
college,
but
who
need
encouragement
and
direction.
Each
student
is
paired
with
one
volunteer
adult
partner.
During
the
year,
students
and
partners
meet
weekly
to
work
together
on
math
and
language
arts.
Students
also
receive
help
with
SAT
prep
and
college
applications.
Other
aspects
of
the
program
include
college
tours,
career
fairs,
and
scholarships
to
qualified
applicants.
PAL
is an after
school and
summer camp
program which
provides opportunities
to interact
and care for
resident PAL
pets and learn
about animals
and science
in a fun and
creative way.
