Fifteen middle and high school participants attended this year’s trip. Beacon House’s teen program director and staff created an exciting weekend of structured, informative, enriching tours and activities on both campuses. This stimulating academic excursion proved to be another astonishing educational experience of a lifetime. Each participant gained first hand exposure to a diverse array of educational opportunities that will prepare participants for success in a traditional or non-traditional college, university, or trade school upon completion of high school. “Through My Eyes” a photo narrative project is aimed to give youth an opportunity to give voice to his/her story and find/create meaning in the telling. During this time, six female participants are working closely with a mentor who will help participants find words and vision to describe their life experiences. In this act itself, with the support of a caring and thoughtful adult, we believe youth will feel empowered and affirmed, having asserted the meaningfulness of their lives. -

Help Portrait Event 12/4/10 (13)
Help-Portrait, a non-profit organization, was formed in 2009 by celebrity photographer, Jeremy Cowart as he contemplated using his skills and expertise to give back to those who may not have the opportunity for a professional photo. The idea is that a photographer has the unique ability to help someone smile, laugh and return their dignity. It is a movement, a shift in photography. Over 200 people obtained free portraits at the Beacon House sponsored event.
