LaShone
Bell
Ms. Bell
is a longtime resident
of Edgewood Terrace and
parent of three Beacon
House children, the
oldest of which is now
training to be a
paramedic. She
currently works for
Family and Child
Services of Washington,
D.C. as a manager for a
group home for boys in
the foster care system.
She serves on the
Edgewood Terrace
Residents Association,
and is on the Parent
Advisory Council of the
Seed School, a D.C.
Charter School.
Cassandra
Burnett
Ms.
Burnett is a long time
resident of the Edgewood
Terrace community and
has been an aggressive
community activist for
the betterment of this
and surrounding
communities since 1994.
She has held offices in
civil rights and civil
liberties groups with
several pioneers. In
addition to her
activism, Ms. Burnett
has served as a teacher
as well as worked in
telecommunications and
human services. She has
been involved with
organizations Harlem
Business and
Professional Club,
Harlem YWCA, the
Philadelphia General
Hospital, and is a
charter member of the
National Organization of
Women.
Paula
Cole Jones
Ms. Cole
Jones is a management
consultant, primarily
working on systems
change, including
anti-racism,
anti-oppression, and
multiculturalism with
Unitarian Universalist (UU)
congregations and in the
UU Association of
Churches. She is a
member of All Souls
Church, Unitarian and is
a past member of the
Board of Trustees. She
has also conducted board
development training.
Dean
D’Angelo
Mr.
D’Angelo is a Director
of D. E. Shaw Direct
Capital, L.L.C. He is
one of the founders of
the Capital for Children
investor group. He
holds dual masters
degrees in International
Economics from Johns
Hopkins University and
in Finance (MBA) from
Wharton School at
University of
Pennsylvania. He served
in the Peace Corps in
Ukraine, and has served
on boards of various
businesses and non
profit organizations.
Karen
Gavin-Evans (Vice Chair)
Ms.
Gavins-Evans is
relatively new to the
D.C. area, where she
resides with her husband
and two young children.
She currently works for
Mental Health &
Promotion, Danya
International as a
senior research
associate. She holds a
Ph.D. in clinical
psychology from the
University of Miami in
Coral Gables, and has
focused her work on
family involvement in
children’s development
and education. She has
also worked as a school
psychologist as well as
served as clinical
faculty in the graduate
level School Psychology
program at Indiana
University.
David
“Ty” Johnson
Mr.
Johnson is a long time
Beacon House volunteer
and parent. He currently
works at the Central
Intelligence Agency as
an Information Systems
Security Manager. He
holds a Master’s Degree
in Business
Administration as well
as a Master’s
Certificate in Project
Management and has had a
long career in
information technology.
David has worked closely
with Beacon House as a
mentor and football
coach. He currently
lives in D.C. with his
wife and children.
David
Lorms (Secretary)
Mr. Lorms
has had a long career in
association management,
including capabilities
in volunteer leadership
development, membership
engagement, strategic
planning, and staff
development. He holds a
degree in Public
Administration for
California State
University, which has
been augmented by a
range of experience
including sales
experiences in hard and
soft goods, advertising,
and door-to-door sales,
political campaigns,
teaching and four years
as a cook on a US Navy
submarine. He currently
serves as a principal
for Core Concept
Solutions, LLC. He and
his family reside in
Rockville.
Pamela
Lyons
Ms. Lyons
is a native
Washingtonian. She
currently serves as Vice
President and Director
of Community Development
Programs for Community
Preservation and
Development Corporation
(CPDC), the owners of
the Edgewood property
where Beacon House
resides. She holds a
Bachelor of Science in
Education from American
University and taught
for a time, before going
into
organizational/administrative
work. She is an active
participant in the
communities where CPDC
owns property.
George
Niederehe
Dr.
Niederehe is a project
officer in the Adult and
Geriatric Treatment and
Preventive Intervention
Research Branch of the
National Institute of
Mental Health, where he
oversees federally
funded treatment outcome
studies. He also
teaches graduate courses
in the psychology of
aging at local
universities. He
received his Ph.D. in
clinical psychology from
the University of
Chicago, and completed a
Postdoctoral Fellowship
in Gerontological
Psychology at the Texas
Research Institute of
Mental Sciences in
Houston.
William
Rice
Mr. Rice
is a native
Washingtonian who
attended John Burroughs
Elementary School, Taft
Junior High School, and
Mckinley High School.
He currently serves as a
mathematics professor at
the University of the
District of Columbia and
as a mathematics
education consultant
with the District of
Columbia Public
Schools. He holds an
A.B. in mathematics from
Yale College and an
M.A.T. in mathematics
from Harvard
University. He has been
an active member of All
Souls Church, Unitarian
since 1981 and has
taught Sunday school for
many years.
Reverend
Donald Robinson
(President and Founder)
Rev.
Robinson is the
President and Founder of
Beacon House. Prior to
starting Beacon House,
Rev. Robinson was a case
worker for D.C. Human
Services. After
retiring from the
government and attending
Howard University
Divinity School, Rev.
turned his attention to
Edgewood Terrace, where
he saw a need to help
families and children in
the neighborhood. He
rallied volunteers,
started helping with
homework, and served
snacks. Through the
years, Rev. Robinson
presided over the growth
of Beacon House, which
today serves over 400
children per year.
Steven
Schneebaum (Treasurer)
Mr.
Schneebaum is an
attorney at Greenberg
Traurig LLP. He is a
member of the litigation
department, and
concentrates in
international dispute
resolution. He also
heads his firm's pro
bono practice, something
he has done for over 25
years. Mr. Schneebaum
teaches international
legal topics at the
School for Advanced
International Studies,
Johns Hopkins
University. He has
written and lectured
extensively in such
areas as the legal
defense of human and
civil rights. He lives
in the District with his
wife, Karen, who is
Director of the
Rehabilitation
Department at Greater
Southeast Community
Hospital.
Michael
Taets (Chair)
Mr. Taets
currently works for
Freddie Mac, where he
began in 1992. He has
served as a senior
financial analyst, a
portfolio director, and
as a senior portfolio
director. He was named
to the position of vice
president, Duration and
Basis Risk Management in
2006. Prior to joining
Freddie Mac Michael
served in the Illinois
Army National Guard from
1987 to 1992. Michael
has an MBA from George
Washington University, a
B.S. in Finance from
Illinois State
University, and is
designated a Chartered
Financial Analyst. He
lives in Vienna with his
wife and children.
Louvenia
Williams
Ms.
Williams is one of the
founders and currently
the Executive Director
of Edgewood/Brookland
Family Support
Collaborative (E/BFSC),
which is located in
Wards 5 & 6 of
Washington D.C. She has
played a major role in
the development of the
city’s Healthy Families,
Thriving Communities
Collaborative
initiative. She has a
Master's Degree in
Social Work and more
than 30 years of
experience in family and
children's services,
criminal justice,
program planning and
development, mental
health, community
organizing and the
education of social work
students. Ms. Williams
is also a native
Washingtonian, having
grown up in the
Kenilworth Courts Public
Housing Project in
Northeast, D.C. Ms.
Williams sees her
experience of growing up
in a DC public housing
complex as a major
factor in her work in
neighborhoods and
communities.
Michael
Wood
Mr. Wood
is the Director of
Prevention and Cessation
(smoking) – Technical
Assistance and Training
for the American Legacy
Foundation in D.C. He
has worked as a trainer,
training manager and
instructional
designer/developer for
various companies and
nonprofit organizations,
including several
positions with
Communities in Schools,
Inc. He has a B.A.
degree from Virginia
Military Institue and
taught high-school math/GED
classes in Richmond, VA
for 4 years. He has
varied experience in
working with school
systems and with at-risk
youth. He served on an
alumni board of his high
school and has been
through and conducted
board development
training.
Jeff
Leonard (Chair Emeritus)
Dr.
Leonard is the President
and founding shareholder
of Global Environment
Fund, a fund that
invests worldwide in
emerging markets,
including technology,
energy, the environment,
intelligent systems
engineering,
biotechnology and
healthcare. Dr. Leonard
has a BA from Harvard,
an MSC from the London
School of Economics and
a Ph.D. from Princeton
University.
