George Niederehe, Chair
Brookeville, MD
Dr. Niederehe is a project officer in the Adult and Geriatric Treatment and Preventive Intervention Research Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health, where he oversees federally funded treatment outcome studies. He also teaches graduate courses in the psychology of aging at local universities. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Chicago, and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Gerontological Psychology at the Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences in Houston.

Jason Miccolo Johnson, Vice Chair
Washington, D.C.
Mr. Johnson is a self-taught freelance photographer based in Washington, D.C. who specializes in editorial, documentary, portraiture, and special event photography. He is an internationally exhibited photographer with numerous book and magazine covers to his credit. Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Navy as a photographer and was the photo lab director at USA Today for several years. He attended Memphis State University and earned a bachelors of arts degree in Journalism at Howard University.

Steven Schneebaum, Treasurer
Washington, D.C.
Mr. Schneebaum is an attorney at Greenberg Traurig LLP. He is a member of the litigation department, and concentrates in international dispute resolution. He also heads his firm's pro bono practice, something he has done for over 25 years. Mr. Schneebaum teaches international legal topics at the School for Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. He has written and lectured extensively in such areas as the legal defense of human and civil rights. He lives in the District with his wife, Karen, who is Director of the Rehabilitation Department at Greater Southeast Community Hospital.

LaShone Bell
Edgewood Street, N.E., Washington, D.C.
Ms. Bell is a longtime resident of Edgewood Terrace and parent of three Beacon House children, the oldest of whom is now training to be a paramedic. She currently works for Family and Child Services of Washington, D.C. as a manager for a group home for boys in the foster care system. She serves on the Edgewood Terrace Residents Association, and is on the Parent Advisory Council of the Seed School, a D.C. Charter School.

Angela Braxton
Washington, D.C.

Ms. Braxton is a longtime resident of the District of Columbia and is the parent of two Beacon House children. She has been the facility manager for Bright Futures, an independent living facility for teenage mothers who are also foster children in the Edgewood neighborhood, for the past three years. Her advocacy skills and ability to access community resources has been critical to her success in helping the residents of Bright Futures. Angela herself is a former foster child and today is married with three children.

Cassandra Burnett
Edgewood Street, N.E., Washington, D.C.
Ms. Burnett is a long time resident of the Edgewood Terrace community and has been an aggressive community activist for the betterment of this and surrounding communities since 1994. She has held offices in civil rights and civil liberties groups with several pioneers. In addition to her activism, Ms. Burnett has served as a teacher as well as worked in telecommunications and human services. She has been involved with organizations such as Harlem Business and Professional Club, Harlem YWCA, the Philadelphia General Hospital, and is a charter member of the National Organization of Women.

Karen Gavin-Evans
Silver Spring, MD
Ms. Gavins-Evans is relatively new to the D.C. area, where she resides with her husband and two young children.  She currently works for Mental Health & Promotion, Danya International as a senior research associate. She holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, and has focused her work on family involvement in children’s development and education.  She has also worked as a school psychologist as well as served as clinical faculty in the graduate level School Psychology program at Indiana University.   

David “Ty” Johnson
Washington, D.C.
Mr. Johnson is a long time Beacon House volunteer and parent. He currently works at the Federal Government as an Information Systems Security Manager. He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration as well as a Master’s Certificate in Project Management and has had a long career in information technology. David has worked closely with Beacon House as a mentor and football coach. He currently lives in D.C. with his wife and children.

Elizabeth King
Silver Spring, MD
Elizabeth King was born in Nova Scotia of U.S. parents and received her education at Smith College in Massachusetts. She was a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey during a career of 45 years and since her retirement has served as an emeritus scientist with that organization. She is a long-time member of All Souls Unitarian Church of Washington, D.C. and has served there in a number of capacities, most recently on the Audit Committee. She is secretary of the East Silver Spring Citizens Association and was a founder and currently treasurer of the Potomac Geophysical Society.

Jeff Leonard, Chair Emeritus
Chevy Chase, MD
Dr. Leonard is the President and founding shareholder of Global Environment Fund, a fund that invests worldwide in emerging markets, including technology, energy, the environment, intelligent systems engineering, biotechnology and healthcare. Dr. Leonard has a BA from Harvard, an MSC from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Princeton University.

David Lorms
Rockville, MD
Mr. Lorms has had a long career in association management, including capabilities in volunteer leadership development, membership engagement, strategic planning, and staff development.  He holds a degree in Public Administration for California State University, which has been augmented by a range of experience including sales experiences in hard and soft goods, advertising, and door-to-door sales, political campaigns, teaching and four years as a cook on a US Navy submarine.  He currently serves as a principal for Core Concept Solutions, LLC.  He and his family reside in Rockville.

Michael Taets
Vienna, VA
Mr. Taets currently works for Freddie Mac, where he began in 1992. He has served as a senior financial analyst, a portfolio director, and as a senior portfolio director.  He was named to the position of vice president, Duration and Basis Risk Management in 2006. Prior to joining Freddie Mac Michael served in the Illinois Army National Guard from 1987 to 1992.  Michael has an MBA from George Washington University, a B.S. in Finance from Illinois State University, and is designated a Chartered Financial Analyst. He lives in Vienna with his wife and children. 

Louvenia Williams
Mitchellsville, MD
Ms. Williams is one of the founders and currently the Executive Director of Edgewood/Brookland Family Support Collaborative (E/BFSC), which is located in Wards 5 & 6 of Washington D.C. She has played a major role in the development of the city's Healthy Families, Thriving Communities Collaborative initiative. She has a Master's Degree in Social Work and more than 30 years of experience in family and children's services, criminal justice, program planning and development, mental health, community organizing and the education of social work students. Ms. Williams is also a native Washingtonian, having grown up in the Kenilworth Courts Public Housing Project in Northeast, D.C. Ms. Williams sees her experience of growing up in a D.C. public housing complex as a major factor in her work in neighborhoods and communities.
